To the west of beautiful and historic Lucca, Tuscany, Villa La Stregaia is a private sanctuary set in a landscape of olive groves and chestnut trees beside a babbling brook.

This is the perfect retreat for those who seek privacy and relaxation in the timeless surrounds of rural Tuscany, but appreciate being within a few minutes of the nearest village, good country Trattorie and restaurants. Of course, no visit to La Stregaia would ever be complete, without venturing out at least once to savour the delights of food, architecture and pure Italian style that awaits the visitor to historic Lucca.

The Accommodation

Attention to detail has been lavished on the painstaking restoration of this former water mill by the owners and caretaker. Their treasured whippet dogs, and the cats that roam the terraced gardens, must rank among the world's most fortunate pets to be surrounded by such a lovely variety of flowers, shrubs and aromatic herbs.




The interior is equally beautiful, with its elegant entrance up a flight of stone steps.

The rooms are furnished with valuable antiques and traditional country furniture adds to the charm.
The dining room opens onto a shaded terrace with its large stone table and view over the old mill brook.
The perfect place for quiet al fresco dining.


Villa for rent: Sleeps 6

The villa is built on three levels. The main entrance opens into the middle-level living room, with its fireplace and open staircase.

The ground floor traditional country kitchen opens onto the garden and is equipped with a gas stove, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave oven.
There is a separate laundry room with washing machine.

The large sitting room on the top floor has a fireplace and satellite TV.


Sleeping accommodation is split over two levels.

The master bedroom, complete with canopied double bed and marble tiled en-suite bathroom with shower, is on the top floor.

Also on the top floor is the second bedroom with antique double bed and a bathroom with shower.

The bedroom on the middle-level has two antique beds and a bathroom with shower.


The Area

The high altitude and wooded setting of Villa La Stregaia makes it a cool retreat from the heat of the Summer, for those returning from visits to the local towns and attractions. It is ideal for hikers, who will appreciate the close proximity to a national park.

Walking in the woods is a good way of staying healthy, but you have to be seriously fit if you want to make the most of the shopping and cultural experiences that are on offer in Lucca!

The drive to Lucca takes about 20 minutes. Florence and Pisa are close by and may be more famous, but Lucca is rightly known as a treasure in Tuscany. The birthplace of Puccini, Lucca is renown for the quality of its opera, Medieval and Renaissance architecture, its centuries-old walls, cathedral, Roman amphitheatre, palaces and squares. Connoisseurs of fine food will also know of Lucca from its Lucchesia olive oil, which is regarded by many as the world's finest.



Airports

Pisa airport is approximately 45 minutes drive and Florence airport about one and a half hours. Remember that Villa La Stregaia is in the hills and allowance should therefore be made for slower driving speeds on the final approach.


Price

Prices range from 2,000 Euro per week to 2,800 Euro per week

The price includes final cleaning, gas, electricity and bed and bath linen. Telephone is payable by meter and central heating is charged at 260 Euro per week.
The services of a maid are available on request at a rate of 12 Euro per hour.

The owner is a very good cook and can prepare evening meals on request for a minimum of 6 people. The charge per person will be based on the choice of either a meat or fish menu.
